Although many "Lewis" last name potters in New Mexico and Acoma Pueblo -- this peices is byJoe and Sandra Lewis, a husband-and-wife duo from Acoma Pueblo, create pottery with intricate patterns, often signing their works "JS Lewis". They are known for their polychromatic (multicolored) geometric designs, which are frequently etched and painted in bright colors like blue or turquoise. 

Key characteristics of JS Lewis pueblo pottery patterns:

  • Etched and painted designs: Their pieces feature a combination of hand-painted and hand-etched patterns, which are very detailed and precise.
  • Polychromatic and geometric: The designs are multicolored and rely on geometric forms.
  • Bright accent colors: They often use bright blue or turquoise paint that creates a striking contrast with the red clay of the pot.
  • Traditional Acoma influence: The patterns often include traditional Acoma Pueblo motifs and are a continuation of long-standing family and community pottery traditions.
  • Bear claw designs: Some of their work includes etched "bear claw" patterns
